3. Substitutions

A. Students who spend their third year on exchange at a French-speaking university may be exempt from FREN 320/3.0 based on oral examination. An alternate FREN course may be substituted with the permission of the Undergraduate Chair.

B. Francophone students or students with native proficiency in French are not permitted to take FREN 219/3.0 or FREN 320/3.0. Alternate FREN courses may be substituted with the permission of the Undergraduate Chair.

C. Students who are too advanced in French to take FREN 151/3.0 will need to take FREN 152/3.0 plus one of FREN 230/3.0 or FREN 231/3.0 instead. Students who are too advanced for both FREN 151/3.0 and FREN 152/3.0 will need to take FREN 230/3.0 and FREN 231/3.0 instead. To fulfill the requirements of their degree plan, students in one of these situations will need to take an additional 3.0 or 6.0 units from the 300-level or above to substitute for the missing units from FREN 151/3.0 and/or FREN 152/3.0.

4. Notes

A. Students should note that FREN 106/3.0; FREN 107/3.0; FREN 118/3.0; FREN 225/3.0; FREN 236/3.0; FREN 237/3.0; FREN 238/3.0 and FREN 239/3.0 may not be used towards the requirements of this Plan. Students may not register for, or receive credit for, courses that are at a level lower than their current level of ability. This is particularly true of the 100-level course sequence that contain One-Way Exclusions. 

B. Students who are exempt from FREN 219/3.0 and/or FREN 320/3.0 due to their advanced proficiency in oral French must complete an additional 3.00 or 6.00 units from the 300 level or above to substitute for the missing units from 1.B. and/or 1.C.

C. A maximum of 6.00 units from courses offered by other Faculties and Schools may be counted toward the program and/or Plan requirements. This includes courses in BMED, COMM, GLPH, HSCI, LAW, NURS, and courses offered by Smith Engineering.
